‘Bus blinds’ as they are commonly known, originated in Edwardian England when public transport buses displayed sign-written wooden destination boards, a remnant from the earlier days of the horse-drawn stagecoaches. Petrol engines eventually replaced the use of horses and the lengths of the routes naturally increased. As such, the much more functional roll-blinds were invented. These roll blinds were usually screen-printed and made by hand. Over the years, these ‘blinds’ became machine-made. These days, bus blinds are no longer in use. Instead route destinations are shown digitally on the front of many modes of transport, meaning that traditional ‘blinds’ are forever lost to the history of time, which makes original ‘blinds’ highly collectible. For these reasons, ‘bus blinds’ are both desirable and gorgeous to look at so make seriously impressive interior statements.
For our local island audience, we created a Manx version of the classic bus blinds, instead using actual stops on the Douglas to Port Erin Victorian Steam Train Route as inspiration for our design. Train-spotters unite!
