An immersive Asian dining experience transforms historic hotel.
In a town with long, grey winters, a vibrant and buzzing restaurant interior with a distinctly tropical ambiance was created. The interior is layered and engaging; reminiscent of Asia itself.
Throughout the space, bright teal walls contrast with warm pink, burgundy, and gleaming gold accents- extensive lush greenery make the restaurant come alive. Darker elements—including dark wood floors, black columns and metalwork and antique smoked mirrors—help reflect and distribute light throughout.
Along the east side of the space sits a 6-metre-long bar with dark parquet wood panelling and a blue-veined marble resin top. A striking black ironwork frame envelops the bar, its mesh panels adorned with basket-weave discs and draped with lush, cascading green plants. The extended structure of the bar divides the main rectangular space into distinct areas for drinks and dining. Bar-height stools along the front of the bar give guests a perfect view of mixologists crafting cocktails while they wait for their tables.
The open plan space at ground floor level sis a collection of intimate eating spaces created through the use of a variety of comfortable fixed bench blocks. These over-extended runs with adjacent tables are strategically positioned throughout the space, maximising the layout. Low tables are finished in aged brass and marble, contrasted by the deep red leather of the benches. Private dining aspects and cosy nooks are created, tables are hidden and juxtaposed; the configuration draws guests to move around during the evening and experience the space from different angles. While each table offers privacy, the clever layout maintains a dynamic, voyeuristic element.
Spices are at the heart of Bonzai's identity, woven seamlessly through every element—from the cuisine to the décor. The interior design boldly showcases an eclectic mix of Asian influences: striking custom gold-framed artwork lines the walls, while a huge illuminated faux cherry blossom tree takes center stage. The rear wall features a stunning junglescape complete with monkeys and lush palm trees, complemented by playful, hanging monkey lights near the bar. Bamboo detailing adds Eastern material richness, while strategically placed mirrors and glass create movement and reflection, bringing intimacy to the vibrant and busy atmosphere.
